A safety belt buckle comprises a part 10 movable in a first direction into engagement with a part 12 having a latching element 28 movable in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction between a latching and non- latching position, and a push-button 40 arranged to engage the latching element whereby when the pushbutton is depressed the latching element is moved to the non-latching position thereof; the push button is spring-biassed into a non-depressed position and so arranged that the latching element is movable into its non- latching position without causing movement of the push button As shown, the latching plate 28 is biassed to the latching position by a spring 30 and has wedge-shaped protuberances 32, 34 over which ride over L-shaped tongues 18, 20 of the part 10 whereby the plate firstly rotates about a pin 26 against the action of the spring and then returns to the initial position thereof so that the tongues are engaged behind the inner edges of the protuberances. Depression of the push button 40 against the action of spring 48 displaces the plate 28 to allow disengagement of the parts 10, 12. A part 24 pivotal on the pin 26 includes slots 52 in which is mounted a bar 50 around which the belt 16 is disposed and engaged by an edge 54 integral with the part 24; by lifting the part 24 to disengage the edge 54 from the belt the length of the belt may be adjusted. In a modification, the part 60, or tongue, has a plastics insert 64 to prevent chafing of the belt 62, and the latch plate 68 which is pivotally mounted on a rod 70 has a limb 72 formed with lugs 76 engageable by holes in the tongue and by a push button 86 having side arms engaged around the rod 70; a spring 100 has three pairs of projecting limbs 106, 110 and 108, respectively engaging the push button to urge button in an anticlockwise direction, the underside of the plate 68 to rotate the plate in an anticlockwise direction also, and tongue 60 to eject the latter upon depression of the button.
