Abstract
1,205,089. Photographic type-composing machine. INTERNATIONAL PHOTON CORP. 6 Dec., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 58165/68. Addition to 1,157,635. Heading B6W. A photographic type composing machine as disclosed in Specification 1,157,635, further incorporates an optical system comprising a projection lens and a pair of reflectors in the optical path with means for moving the lens and reflector pair to vary the magnification of projected images. General arrangement, Fig. 2.-A matrix carriage 74 supports a rotating disc 48 having circular rings of characters thereon, each ring representing a different type style; the characters are selectively illuminated by flash lamp 52 through shutter 63, and transmitted through projection lens 54, a pair of mirrors 56, 58, and a third mirror 60 to film 62 which is stationary, except when moved for interline spacing by means of roller pairs 64, 66, 68, 70. Operation is completely automatic in response to instructions from a tape reader (34) (Fig. 1, not shown). Character width displacement.-The disc 48, lamp 52 and shutter 63 are all mounted on carriage 74 on which is stepped along transverse bars 122, (124), (Fig. 4, not shown) under the action of stepping motor 140. Point-size change mechanism.-Lens 54 and mirror pair 56, 58 are carried on supports 164, 168 which are slidably mounted on a track 166. The lens and mirror pair are individually lockable by interaction of pawls 184 with spaced notches 186 in a bar 190 which extends parallel to track 166, the pawls 184 being attached to links (170), 180 (also Fig. 1, not shown) which are manually operated for changing point-size whilst maintaining the images in focus. Change in point-size does not alter the character width displacement of carriage 74, although a correcting movement is required for the first character in a new point-size. Style change.-Changes of style, i.e. utilizing a different ring on disc 48, are achieved by pivoting the shutter 63 so that its aperture (61), (Fig. 5, not shown), aligns with the required ring. Since the character rings are separated from one another horizontally at the shutter location, mounted character width displacement is compensated for by stepping the carriage 74 in the opposite direction to the pivoting of the shutter. Case shift mechanism.-Generally upper and lower case characters are positioned in separate halves of each ring, and the film 62 may be displaced to alter the base line, or, alternatively, only the upper half of lens 54 is used and the character is illuminated when its base coincides with optical axis m. Justification.-The control circuit (Fig. 17, not shown) incorporates units which calculate the required interword expansion for a justified line and feed the information to the "motor register" controlling the stepping motor 140. Tabulation.-Composing of columns of material is possible by treating each line of a column as it if were a whole line of characters, and setting the line length input control suitably. Alternative embodiments.-The matrix disc may be provided with rings containing information representing the width of each character (Fig. 8, not shown). The stepping motor and the drive for the disc may both be mounted on the matrix carriage (Fig. 9, not shown). A variable escapement may be utilized for the matrix carriage, similar to that disclosed in Specification 1,157,635.
