Abstract

1,205,016. Reactive azo dyestuffs. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. 6 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 50913/66. Heading C4P. The invention comprises water-soluble reactive mono- and dis-azo dyestuffs of the formula wherein one Y is -SO 3 H and the other is H, E is a coupling component radical which may contain an aromatic azo group, and Z is an acyl or heterocyclic radical which contains a reactive substituent (i.e. it forms a covalent bond with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose). Preferred dyestuffs have the above general formula wherein E contains a 2,(3 or 4)-disulpho-5-NHZ-phenyl- 1-azo group or the general formula wherein A 1 and A 2 are aromatic azo radicals, at least one being a 2,(3 or 4(-disulpho-5-NHZ- phenyl-1-azo-radical and their metal complexes when A 1 is an aromatic azo radical having a metallizable group. Z may be an acyl radical of an α,#-unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid, a halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acid, or a heterocyclic radical having a ring containing 2 or 3 nitrogen atoms and at least one reactive substituent attached to carbon, e.g. quinoxaline, quinazoline, phthalazine, pyridazine, pyrimidine or triazine. They are prepared by the conventional diazotization and coupling and condensation reactions, and when Z is a triazine having at least one halogen atom the dyestuff may be further reacted with ammonia, a primary, secondary or tertiary amine, an alkali metal salt of sulphurous acid, alkali metal thiocyanate, a phenol or thiophenol containing an electronegative substituent or a compound of one of the formulµ wherein Y<SP>1</SP> completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring which may be substituted or form part of a fused ring system, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl or together with the N atom form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>*</SP> are H, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl. The dyes give yellow, orange, red, blue and black shades on natural or regenerated cellulose.
