Abstract
1,204,518. Grinding; lead screw drives. LANDIS TOOL CO. 15 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 42063/67. Headings B3B and B3D. The feedscrew 20 in a grinding machine is rotated by rotatable positioning means 53 before a machining operation and by feed actuating means 40 during a machining operation, transmission means 52 being provided to connect the feedscrew to both the positioning means and the actuating means such that the feedscrew is rotatable independently by each of the two means. The machine may be operated by dial switches or punch-card, to grind a series of different diameters on a workpiece W with a grinding wheel 16. Rapid feed movement of the grinding wheel is first effected by a piston 21 which moves the feedscrew 20 axially, the grinding feed then being effected by a piston 30 or a hand wheel 29; if the work has not yet been ground to the desired dimension, the feed actuating means 40 (a ratchet mechanism) is initiated by pistons 47, 49 to rotate the feedscrew incrementally. When a caliper 18 signals that the workpiece W has been ground to size, the pistons 21, 30 and the ratchet mechanism 40 are reversed to retract the grinding wheel. For grinding widely varying diameters, rapid rotation of feedscrew 20 is effected by the positioning means 53 (hydraulic motor 58 and electrical brake 68). The transmission means 52 consists of differential gearing, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the output drive shaft 37 for rotating the feedscrew 20 being rotated either by an input shaft 54 driven by the motor 58 or by a worm gear 42 of the ratchet mechanism 40 when the shaft 54 is locked against rotation. Control of the brake 68 and motor 58 is through an electrical control panel 88 and a solenoid-operated valve 60 in the hydraulic circuit. Push buttons PBA and PBR may be used to control the valve 60 and position the grinding wheel, the position being read on an indicator 86; if desired, this position may be obtained by setting dial switches 85. A selector 110 is provided to change the control from the dial switches 85 to a punch-card reader.
