Abstract

1,204,459. 4,4<SP>1</SP>-Dihydroxytetraphenyl methane. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 9 July, 1969 [11 July, 1968], No. 34665/69. Addition to 1,184,289. Heading C2C. 4,4<SP>1</SP> - Dihydroxytetraphenyl methane is prepared by heating pure dichlorodiphenyl methane and at least 90% pure phenol in a molar ratio of 1: 2-2À4 in an inert solvent having a boiling point in the range of 80-200‹ C. and which is substantially anhydrous and non-hygroscopic, the heating of the reactants being affected by slowly raising the temperature of the mixture to the boiling point of the inert solvent and completing the reaction at the same temperature. Toluene, xylene and chlorobenzene are suitable solvents. The product may be purified by recrystallization from a C 1-4 alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane or tetrahydrofuran or mixtures thereof, optionally containing up to 100% by volume of water providing the solubility therein permits.
