An automatic focusing arrangement in a photographic camera includes a photo-cell having a non-linear relationship between the emitted photo-current and the area of the cell illuminated when a subject being taken is imaged thereupon, this photo-current depending on the degree of defocusing and being used to effect a displacement of the objective lens of the camera, e.g. by a servomotor. The non- linearity may be achieved by providing a graduated filter of varying density in front of the sensitive area of the cell, or the sensitive area may have different partial sensitivities. With the non-linearity established as above by external means, photo-electric elements having a linear relationship between the photo-current and the illumination intensity (e.g. photoelectric diodes) may be used.
