Abstract

1,204,339. Apparatus for melt-spinning composite filaments. CHEMIEFASERWERK SCHWARZA "WILHELM PIECK" VEB. 6 Dec., 1967, No. 55431/67. Heading B5B. An apparatus for melt spinning composite filaments, i.e. filaments which are formed by simultaneously extruding through the or each orifice of a spinneret two or more molten polymers differing from one another in chemical composition and/or in physical properties in such a manner that the filaments formed consist of two or more components bonded together along their length in either side-by-side or sheath-core arrangement, comprises two or more separate combined polymer melting and pump feed units, for example, one for one polymer to be formed into a component of a two-component composite filament and the other unit for the other component polymer. The units are adapted to be heated independently of one another and the two polymers may thus be heated to different temperatures. The feed pumps of the units are driven independently of one another and may be driven at different speeds. The melts from the two units are fed through separate heated feed pipes simultaneously to one or more exchangeable spinning heads each provided with its own pair of spinning pumps, one for each melt. As shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, two different polymers in granular form are fed respectively to melting units 5 and 6, respectively. The polymer melts collected in sumps 7 and 8, respectively, are then fed to the two separate spinning head and spinning pump assemblies 19 and 20 via the melt supply pipes 15 and 16 by means of the individually driven gear feed pumps 13 and 14. The melts pass through the inlet ducts 21 and 22, respectively, to the independently driven spinning pumps 25 and 26 which meter the melts to the spinneret assembly 38 through the ducts 27, 36 and 28, 37, respectively. The pump units have separate heating jackets 29 and 30 and the melt supply pipes have separate heating jackets 17 and 18, an organic liquid heating medium being circulated through these jackets and through the heating jacket 39 of the spinning head 35.
