1,204,108. Combined vacuum cleaner and floor polisher. ELECTROLUX Ltd. 27 March, 1969 [10 April, 1968; 11 Dec., 1968], No. 16111/69. Heading A4F. [Also in Divisions B8 and E2] A surface treating apparatus such as a combined vacuum cleaner and floor polisher comprises a housing 12 with a suction opening and two or more brushes 25-27 driven by an electric motor 16, a dust collector 17 communicating with the suction opening and a handle assembly 11 connected to the housing, the motor being positioned so that the effect of its weight on the brushes can be varied. This is achieved by mounting the motor in a housing 35 of the handle assembly, the drive from the motor being transmitted to the brush 25 by a belt 19, a shaft 15, a worm screw 22 and a worm wheel 23. A fan 32 draws air through a brush nozzle 75, a conduit 31, a conduit 33 in an operable cover 34 of the housing 35 and the dust collector 17. Legs 13, 14 of the housing 35 which enable the handle assembly to be pivoted to the housing 12 about the shaft 15, also form part of the conduit 31 and a conduit for the drive belt 19. The top of the cover 34 is provided with a shutter which, in its open position, opens the conduit 33 to atmosphere and allows cleaning liquid in a container positioned above the cover to be applied to the brushes. The housing also accomodates a wax container provided at its bottom with a metering valve. The wax may be dispensed by pressing the container, a hole being provided in the cover 34 for access to the container, however when the cleaning liquid container is in position both the wax and the cleaning liquid may be dispensed by controls adjacent the handle which is positioned at the top of bars 18. A sight glass in the top of the cover 34 enables the contents of the dust bag to be viewed and holes in the housing 35 enable the wax level to be monitored. A catch on the cover prevents the cover being closed unless a dust bag has been fitted and the cleaner is movable on three wheels, one of which is a castor wheel. A pan which completely covers the bottom of the cleaner apart from the suction opening is provided to enable rugs to be vacuum cleaned whilst the brushes are still wet from previous shampooing operations.
