[Also in Division F2] A length of double walled pipe for a reverse circulation drill string (not shown) is joined to an adjacent length by threaded pin and bar ends 12, 13 on the outer pipes 11, 11' and a separate connector tube 22 for the inner pipes 16, 16', the inner pipes terminating short of the ends of the outer pipes and also short of the inner ends of the threading so as to receive enlarged socket ends 23 of the connector tube at positions where these ends can be accommodated without restricting flow in the annular flow passage 17 to an extent in excess of the restriction imposed by the thickened portions of the outer tube which are required to accommodate the tapered threading used for joining the ends 12, 13 while maintaining a constant outer diameter of the assembly. Ease of assembly is ensured by making the inside diameter of the socket ends 23 of a diameter sufficiently larger than that of the inner tubes to receive the latter easily, sealing being accomplished by a sealing ring 26 fitted in a groove 25 in each socket end. Where the permissable ratio of the diameters of inner and outer pipes is such that the outside diameter of the socket ends is only a little less than the inside diameter of the thickened portions of the outer tube ends, as shown in the case of the lower end of the outer tube 11; the guiding provided for the socket end of the connector tube by the interior of such thickened portion is sufficient to ensure easy location on the end of the inner tube. However, in the case of the lower socket end shown, and where the ratio of the diameters of inner and outer pipes is such that this guiding would be insufficient (as in the embodiment of Fig. 4, not shown) webs 17, 18 joining the inner and outer tubes in coaxially spaced relation may be extended to provide inclined ramp portions, as at 20 in Fig. 1, to guide the sockets smoothly into alignment with the inner tube ends. The connector tube may in a modification (Fig. 5 not shown) be a sheet metal pressing instead of a casting, as shown.
