Cast-iron processes.-For making wrought iron, pig iron is initially melted, fluxed and boiled in a rotary furnace without manual labour, up to the point of graining the iron, and the boiling furnace is then moved bodily and tilted so as to transfer the charge to a stationary balling or puddling furnace in which the metal is further treated and formed into balls by manual labour. As shown in Fig. 1, two rotary balling furnaces 2 are arranged one on either side of a puddling furnace 1, and are adapted to be swung bodily on cranes 26 over the latter and tilted to discharge their contents into it.
