Abstract
1,203,931. Computers. VEEDER-ROOT Ltd. 23 Aug., 1967 [1 Sept., 1966; 22 Feb., 1967], Nos. 39024/66 and 8381/67. Headings G4A, G4D and G4P. A variator is adjustable so as to inhibit a selected proportion of pulses produced by a set of pulse-producing base elements. A shaft 101, rotated according to the amount of fuel dispensed, carries a set of discs 11-14, 21-24, respectively having 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 20, 40, 80 teeth, none of which are co-incident. An air pressure line 100 feeds fluid logic eements 31- 34, 41-44 with outlets 102 energized at the passage of each tooth. The outlets 102 lead to inhibiting elements 51-54, 61-64 which are opened or closed according to the presence or absence of a hole such as 71 in a price card, Fig. 2, placed across the openings 104. The teeth on the discs may be replaced by off-set projections or by apertures with suitable modification of the logic elements 31-34, 41-44. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the teeth may influence pick-up coils supplied with alternating ncrrent to superimpose pulses on the out. put. Alternatively photoresistors may respond to light passing through holes, or electromagnetic pick-ups may be used. Fig. 7 shows the invention applied to a petrol pump, the volume dispensed being resigtered at 139 while the variator discs 138 send impulses to inhibitors 141 adjusted according to the unit price. The resulting pulses, pneumatic or electric are sent to a cost register 140. For fine subdivisions of price the pump may drive a secondary shaft at a tenth of the speed of the main variator shaft. Alternatively a set of secondary pick-ups 150, Fig. 8, may be connected to a secondary set of inhibitors 144, the output of which is divided by ten at 148 and given slight delay at 152 to avoid coincidence with the other outputs.
