[Also in Division C2] A contact apparatus for the catalytic production of formaldehyde by the reaction in the presence of a silver catalyst between methanol and air, or methanol water vapour and air comprises a water heat exchanger, a silver catalyst bed that is positioned as close as possible to but beneath the heat exchanger and a gas entry opening for the bases beneath the catalyst bed, and a gas outlet for the products at the head of the heat exchanger.
