Abstract

1,203,045. Polymer compositions. MAGNAFLUX CORP. 22 Nov., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 53248/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C4] Liquid compositions capable of drying to a substantially humidity insensitive brittle film responsive to strains by cracking and adapted for use in measuring surface strain concentrations in rigid articles when coated on the surface thereof and dried to a film of thickness 0.004 to 0.009 inch, comprise (1) a humidity insensitive resin having a softening point of 120‹ to 180‹ C. selected from terpene, indene and coumarone/ indene resins, (2) 112 to 20 parts of plasticizer per 400 parts by weight of resin sufficient for cracking of the film when strains of at least 100 microinches per inch are imposed on the rigid body at 0‹ to 130‹ F., said plasticizer being selected from n-butyl stearate, tributyl phosphate and alkyl aryl phosphates, and (3) a solvent or solvent system selected from carbon disulphide, and mixtures of methylene chloride with chlorobromomethane, 1,2-dichloroethylenes, methylene bromide or methylene iodide. The compositions may be applied by brushing or spraying, optionally with compressed carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide as propellant, to rigid articles to determine strain concentrations. Additional plasticizers, e.g. glycolates, phthalates and sulphonamides may also be present.
