Abstract

1,203,031. Sulphur. ELLIOTT ASSOCIATED DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 9 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36083/66. Heading CIA. A method of preparing sulphur for transport by pipe-line in a carrier liquid comprises introducing molten sulphur into a liquid medium different from the carrier liquid to create a dispersion of solid sulphur particles in said different liquid medium, separating the sulphur particles from at least the bulk of the different liquid medium and blending them into the carrier liquid for transport. Molten sulphur is introduced, preferably at 128‹ C. into a light oil fraction in vessels 11 equipped with stirrers 26. The dispersion of sulphur produced is withdrawn by means 12 and passed through two stages of a three-stage heat exchanger, preferably a plate heat exchanger, 14 in stage 21 being in counter current with stripped oil and stage 20 cooled by water. From the heat exchanger the sulphur dispersion passes to a precipitation tank 23 having a stirrer 25 and from there to a hydrocyclone or centrifuge 15 where the sulphur is stripped from the oil. The sulphur passes into a blending tank 24 stirred by stirrer 31 where it is blended with carrier liquid and, if desired, sulphur in granulated form produced by known methods. The stripped oil passes to a tank 16 from where it passes to two stages 21, 22 of the heat exchanger 14, in stage 22 being heated by steam prior to passing to the vessels 11. The sulphur blended with the sulphur produced according to the invention may be made by passing molten sulphur through fine nozzles into a granulator which has an impeller operating counter to a swirl produced in a cooling liquid by tangentially disposed nozzles, Fig. 2 (not shown).
