Abstract
1,201,901. Sailing simulators. T.P.I. Ltd. 18 Aug., 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 22383/66. Heading B7V. In a sailing simulator for training a helmsman, a hull 61 carries a mast M with a boom B for a fore-and-aft mainsail, the mast being partially rotatable by an hydraulic actuator 47 to simulate wind action on the sail, which actuator is itself partially rotatable against the action of springs 423 (only one shown) through a gear system to simulate at the mainsheet 76 the wind-pressure. The hull is made to heel as though responding to the wind-pressure on the mainsail by an hydraulic actuator 58 through gears 72. Rotation of the hull about a vertical axis is effected by a motor 65 through a gear-box 66. Potentiometers and variable resistors 51- 54 are included in an electric and hydraulic system, Fig. 2 (not shown), for controlling the actuators 47, 58, and wherein the amount of heel can be computed as described in Specification 1,201,602. A device for determining the apparent wind-direction may be provided as described in Specification 1,165,673. The actuator 47, potentiometer 51, springs 23 and associated gear-system may be replaced by a similar but some-what simpler arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown).
