Abstract

1,201,871. Fuel cells. VARTA A.G. 8 July, 1968 [8 July, 1967], No. 32493/68. Heading H1B. In a fuel cell with gas diffusion electrodes 2, 1 and adjacent fuel 4 and oxygen 3 chambers wherein liquid fuel-carrier 14 and liquid oxygencarrier 9 are decomposed on catalytically active layers of the electrodes to produce fuel and oxygen gas to power the cell, a rising main 12, 7 is provided between each liquid reactantcarrier storage chamber 13, 8 and its respective electrode, the volume of each rising main plus the volume of the conduit joining the rising main and its gas chamber being sufficient to take up all the gas produced at its electrode. As shown an alkaline fuel cell has aq. alkaline NaBH 4 fed to anode 2 where it decomposes to give H 2 , and aq. H 2 O 2 fed to cathode 1 where it decomposes to give O 2 . Liquid is displaced from chambers 4, 3 by the gas generated but the rising mains prevent gas leaking back to the storage tanks. In the case of a battery all the electrodes can be supplied with liquids or some may be supplied with gas produced at other electrodes. Excess gases may also be bled off and fed to another fuel cell or battery.
