Abstract

1,201,457. Electrostatic separators. PETROLITE CORP. 6 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 12035/69. Heading B2J. An electric treater for separating a dispersion containing immiscible external and internal liquid phases formed of a liquid organic material and an aqueous material comprises a closed container having an upright flow axis, an energizable electrode 53 and a grounded electrode 81 producing a non-direct current electric field having a voltage gradient not above 1000 volts for each inch the electric field traverses the dispersion and flow straightening means providing the sole fluid communication between the electrodes and the upper part of the container. A header 37 extends across the interior of the container and the flow straightening means comprises vertical cells 44 which occupy the whole of the upper part of the container. Liquid enters from a conduit 12 and flows between discs 84, 86 causing a turbulent flow. After passing the electrodes and through the cells 44 the fluid is removed through a conduit at the top of the container, the aqueous material being removed from the lower part of the container through a conduit 24.
