Abstract
1,201,153. Pressure vessel. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 10 Nov., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 42949/66. Heading B1X. [Also in Division B3] A high pressure vessel comprises an inner layer 4b defining a pressure chamber 1, and a segmental backing layer 3b made of material of higher elastic modulus than the inner layer. The latter may be of maraging steel, tool steel or titanium whilst the backing layer 3b is of cemented tungsten carbide; alteratively the inner layer may be of titanium, rubber, plastics or glass whilst the backing layer is of tool steel. One or more inner layers may be provided with one or more backing layers. The backing layer is formed as segmental blocks 3b of tungsten carbide which may have controlled gaps 13 adapted to open at peak pressure. An intermediate layer 12, formed by segments of tool steel, may be provided with radial gaps so arranged that they are never open at the innermost surface of the layer 12. This layer may however be omitted, Fig. 2 (not shown). The backing layer enclosed in at least one outer layer 2b of mono-block, wire wound or segmental construction and made of ductile steel. End caps (6), Fig. 1 (not shown) are provided for the vessel. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the entire vessel is enclosed with radial clearance (11) in a casing (10) and a cyclic pressure is developed in this clearance to reduce the stress range in the vessel. The vessel may be of cylindrical or spherical shape.
