Abstract

1,201,152. Cutting pipes by fusion; copymilling. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 12 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 41430/66. Headings B3V and B3K. A pipe profiling apparatus comprises a profiling tool 52 mounted to rotate about the axis of the pipe 20 to be profiled and to be moved axially of the pipe by a cam 82 having the general shape of the profile to be cut. The tool is preferably a flame cutting torch for profile cutting the end of a metal branch pipe to be welded into a main pipe; alternatively the tool may be a mechanical cutter such as a router and may be used on pipes other than metal. The apparatus is secured to the pipe 20 by chains 26, 27 with removable links and tensioned by wing- nuts 34 and has serrated and plain running wheels 16, 17 respectively. The serrated wheels are driven through chain (45), Fig. 2 (not shown) by a motor drive or by handles 50 for traversing the apparatus around the stationary pipe 20. The torch 52 is mounted on an arm 54 pivoted in a bush 57 at the lower end of a support 58. A wheel 61 connected to the bush by member 60 engages the inside of the pipe for maintaining the correct spacing of the torch. Support 58 is connected by parallel linkage 67 to a block 65 mounted on the end of slidable shaft 66 secured to a vertical plate 71 biased to the right by compression spring 83. Plate 71 carries a block 72 vertically adjustable by a lead-screw 78 and having a roller follower engaging a lever 75 pivoted at 76. This lever carries a roller follower 80 engaging a cam 82 mounted on shaft 84 which is held against rotation about its axis by a flexible shaft 88 connected to a stationary support 90. Alternatively the follower 80 may move in a cam slot or between two face cams with complementary profiles. During rotation of the apparatus about the pipe, the roller follower 80 on cam 82 causes axial movement of the torch. A horizontal scale 94 is used to set the diameter of the main pipe (R), Fig. 3 (not shown), and a vertical scale 103 is used to set the diameter of the branch pipe (r). The torch may be set for cutting straight or bevel cuts. In the latter case the torch is swung automatically about bush 57 by a flexible drive-shaft 105 connected to a horizontal slider 95 and to an adjustable arm 99 pivoted at 102 to plate 71. Bush 57 may be an adjustable eccentric.
