Abstract

1,201,066. Optical filters. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORP. 24 Aug., 1967 [2 Sept., 1966 (2)], No. 39085/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] An infra-red optical filter particularly for use with sunglass lenses comprises a layer containing an infra-red absorber comprising at least one metal complex of a bis - (cis 1,2 - bis(alkyl, hydrogen, aryl or heterocyclic) vinylene 1,2 - dithiolate. As shown in Fig. 1 one or more complex having the general formula where Me is a first, second or third transition series metal, is formed as a layer or coating 14 on transparent plastics sheets 12 such as cellulose derivatives between which is a polarizing sheet 10, e.g. molecularly orientated polyvinyl acetate, and having abrasive resistant coatings 16 applied in situ by polymerization. Lamination of the layers 10, 12 is facilitated by placing an additional plastics layer between layer 10 and another plastics layer, or the cellulose derivative surface may be hydrolysed to cellulose in the case of cellulose ester with an alkali to provide a suitable laminate surface. In another embodiment the infra-red transmitted does not exceed the visible light transmitted by more than 5%.
