Abstract

1,200,797. Preparation of adipic acid esters. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 31 Oct., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966; 12 April, 1967], No. 49508/67. Heading C2C. Adipic acid esters are prepared by the reductive dimerization of acrylic acid esters by subjecting a mixture consisting of an acrylic acid ester, an iron carbonyl compound, e.g. Fe(CO) 5 and either an alcohol or a phenol to exposure by actinic light, e.g. from a high pressure mercury lamp. Specified acrylic acid esters include the alkyl esters having 1 to 12, preferably 1 to 3, carbon atoms and cycloalkyl esters having 3 to 12 carbon atoms acrylic acid. Heating of the reaction mixture either during exposure up to a temperature of 150‹ C. or after exposure at a temperature of between 40‹ and 200‹ C. may be carried out to obtain increased yields.
