Abstract

1,200,795. Adjusting mechanism for brakes; clutch control. BORG-WARNER CORP. 26 Sept., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 43835/67. Headings F2E, F2F and F2L. In a fluid-operated brake or clutch, a lever 13 is pivoted at 35, an adjustable length member 45 being interposed between an actuator 10 and the lever 13 and a spring 50 frictionally engaging the adjustable length member 45 and arranged to provide automatic adjustment of the effective length of member 45 whenever lever 13 is moved beyond a predetermined limit. As described, the brake is applied by injecting hydraulic fluid into chamber 20, the resulting movement of piston 12 causing anticlockwise movement of lever 13 which is coupled by a strut 14 to the band brake of an automatic transmission. The brake is released by a spring 22 or by injection of fluid into chamber 21. If the friction members should become worn, an arm 51 of a helical spring 50, wrapped around the thread of bolt 45, engages the upper arm 32 of a V-slot so that the spring 50 will be loosened and moved anticlockwise relative to the bolt 45. On release of the brake, the arm 51 will engage the lower side 33 of the V-slot, tightening the spring 50 on the bolt 45 and thus rotating it so as to compensate for brake wear. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the arm 51 has a U-shaped end, the sides of which engage a tapered or cylindrical pin (Figs. 5, 7, not shown) replacing the V-slot of Fig. 1.
