Abstract

120,078. Stevenson, J. W. Oct. 22, 1917. Nozzles for producing whirting sprays.-An atomizer, applicable also for mixing, heating, or cooling liquids, of the kind in which fluid under pressure is admitted tangentially to a whirl chamber having an axial outlet, is provided with an inlet extending practically from one wall of the whirl chamber to the other and the outlet is of a crosssection equal to or greater than the inlet. Figs. 2 and 3 show a fan, in which the inlet c is of circular form at c', and gradually merges into a rectangle at c where it enters the spiral whirl chamber a at its greatest diameter. The whirl chamber is provided with one or two outlets b, which may have nozzles b<1> attached to them which may either have sharp or beaded edges. When two or more fluids are to be mixed, the inlets may either join just as they enter the whirl chamber or may be diametrically opposite one another. The whirl chamber may be provided with a cone d, Fig. 8, formed on one end of the drum concentric with the outlet, the height of the cone being less than the height of the inlet orifice. Fig. 14 shows a modification for mixing two fluids, in which the drum e with its inlet c' and outlet b<4> is surrounded by a second drum provided with an inlet e', the two inlets communicating with one another by means of tangential ducts e'. When the second fluid is air, the outer drum may be omitted, when air will be drawn through the ducts e<2>. In a further modification, the whirl chamber, instead of consisting of a cylindrical drum. has the walls curved and merging into the outlet orifice and also into a cone similar to that shown in Fig. 8.
