Abstract

1,200,667. Cooling and granulating melts. R. RUMMEL. 9 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36587/67. Addition to 1,071,613. Heading B5A. Melts, in particular plastics melts, are formed into strands or granulated by surrounding the melt stream issuing from the melting apparatus with a coaxial stream of coolant; the flow of coolant and melt being maintained by the suction effect of a further stream of coolant until the melt stream has solidified; separating the solidified material and coolant and optionally cutting the solid stream to form granules. In one embodiment, as shown, the melt 2 is poured from a hole a in a melt container 1. Cooling fluid 6 is supplied through passage 7 so that it forms a sheath around the melt and further cooling fluid e may be sprayed from holes 14 connecting with annular cavity 17. Baffles in passage 7 prevent rotation of the coolant. The suction medium c is supplied from an annular jet 5 and its motion along pipe 6 drags the solidified melt with it. In alternative embodiments, the pipe 6 may be tapered so that the increase in speed of the suction medium c stretches and decreases the radius of the solidified melt. The melt may emerge through more than one hole, into several streams, either with individual or bulk cooling, the solidified melt streams being passed together through the outlet from pipe 6 and the means for separating the solidified melt from the other fluids. The partly solidified streams may be rotated individually or all together by supplying the cooling liquid tangentially. In the example a melt of nylon 66 is drawn off from the reactor through 8 mm. i.d. holes, at a temperature of 270‹ C., cooled by water at 30‹ C., propelled and stretched to a diameter of 3 mm. by water supplied at 4 atmospheres and 30‹ C. and divided into 3 mm. long sections by a cutter with 42 blades rotating at 3,400 r.p.m.
