Abstract

1,200,640. 3 - Oxa - A - nor - #<SP>1À5(10)</SP> - steroids. SHIONOGI & CO. Ltd. 20 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 53063/67. Heading C2C. Novel title compounds of the partial formula are prepared by reduction of 2 - oxo - 3 - oxa - #<SP>1(10)</SP> - A - nor - steroids. The steroids may be of the estrane or 19 - nor - pregnane, -cholane or - cholestane series. Suitable reducing agents are aluminium compounds of the formula where M is an alkali metal, R is C 1 _ 4 alkyl or alkoxy, n is zero or I and m is zero, 1, 2 or 3 when n is zero and zero, 1, 2, 3 or 4 when n is 1. Boranes may also be used. Starting materials of the formula (wherein X is CO or a ketal thereof, CHOH or an acrylate thereof, or C(R<SP>1</SP>)OH where R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-5 hydrocarbon group, or is a group corresponding to a group in the 17-position of a steroids of the pregnane, cholane or cholestane series) are prepared by enol-lactonization of appropriate 5 - oxo - A - dinor - 2,5 - seco - 19 - norsteroid - 2 - oic acids. The compounds of the invention have various antihormonal properties, and they may be incorporated in pharmaceutical compositions.
