Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A regulated static power supply for maintaining a predetermined D.C. voltage at a load 9 comprises anA.C. source 1 feeding a transformer 2 having two secondary windings A, B of which the latter supplies a rectifier 3 feeding an inverter 5 whose output is controlled in accordance with the error signal from a comparator 6 receiving the load voltage signal and a signal from reference source 7, the output of inverter 5 being combined with that from the winding A and the combination being rectified, filtered and supplied to the load 9. The output waveform of the inverter 5 is a quasisquare wave of constant amplitude whose pulse duration is varied in accordance with the error signal from comparator 6. The frequency of inverter 5 is chosen to produce a rectified output ripple frequency equal to or greater than the fundamental ripple frequency produced by the rectifier action on the output from the winding A. In the three-phase embodiment shown in Fig.2, the inverter 5 is generally similar to that described in Specification 1,148,439 and provides a constant amplitude, variable pulse duration output to the primary winding of a transformer 12 which forms part of a summing rectifier comprising the diodes D1 to D12. The latter form two conventional three-phase bridge rectifiers MR1, MR2 whose inputs are derived from the main transformer 2 and whose outputs are connected to the secondary windings of the transformer 12, these windings being similarly poled and having centre taps providing an output voltage waveform 11. At instants when the inverter output voltage is zero the bridge rectifiers operate normally, but when an output voltage is present the conducting paths through the rectifiers are altered due to certain diodes being biased into non-conduction by the voltages produced in the secondary windings of transformer 12. Derivation of the output from the centre taps of the windings provides a balanced average distribution of current between the diodes D1 to D12.
