Abstract
1,200,552. Glow plug igniter. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 23 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 24622/68. Heading F4F. A glow plug igniter for use in a combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine comprises a tubular metal shell 10 with one end constituting an annular ground electrode 12 and which surrounds a unitary ceramic insulator 14 with a centre bore and which at its end adjacent the ground electrode has three axially extending grooves separated by three axially extending ribs, both of which terminate at a firing tip having a surface 25 in a plane extending at right angles to the axis of the centre bore and having an area of between 5 and 30% of the area of a circle drawn in the plane and having a radius equal to the radius of a cylindrical portion of the insulator into which the grooves are cut, and has a centre electrode 22 positioned in the centre bore and a substantially flat coil 24 of spirally wound resistance wire positioned on the surface 25 and connected at one end to the centre electrode and at the other to the ground electrode 12, the arrangement being such that the surface provides support for the coil without excess removal of heat therefrom which would cause the coil to be inoperative. Holes 23 in the shell 10 provide paths for air so that fuel vapour may ignite on contacting the coil. In the preferred embodiment the surface 25 has an area of 18-22% of said circle, and the wire is in the form of a ribbon. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,098,149.
