Abstract

1,200,522. Isotactic moulding. COORS PORCELAIN CO. 17 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 34061/68. Addition to 1,093,205. Heading B5A. Ceramic or metal powders, for sintering, are isostatically compressed within a tubular rubber mould 4 to the exterior whereof hydrostatic pressure is applied and within which is non- concentrically located one or more inserts 16 which are free to move with the powder upon the compressing thereof. In the production of a hexagonal section ceramic article incorporating a plurality of parallel cylindrical, triangular or square inserts 16, the inserts 16 are located within rubber mould 4 on pins 14, 10, respectively, provided in a filling cap 8, and in a filling base 6 and mould end plate 12, the cap 8 and plate 12 being provided with locating lugs 18, 20 ensuring correct alignment with the mould 4. The mould 4 is vibrated during filling through cap opening 24 with the powder which may contain organic binder. The filling cap 8 and the base 6 and plate 12, and the associated pins 14, 10, are then removed and replaced by plates 25, 26, or the base 6 may alternatively remain with the plate 12 being replaced by a plate provided with suitable plugs, whereby the inserts 16 are not supported against radial movement upon compression of the powder by oil or water within a pressure chamber 28, or alternatively, with the plates 25, 26 supported against inward axial movement, by complete immersion of the assembly within a pressure tank. The inserts may extend only partially through the article and may also be arranged at an angle to the longitudinal mould axis and may be curved. Instead of the filling cap and plate 8, 12, the inserts may be supported during filling by compressible end caps of plastics foam which may remain and permit movement of the cores during the moulding operation. Articles may be moulded having inserts of non-uniform crosssection containing undercuts, Fig. 6 (not shown). The filling cap 8 may also be of a similar two-part construction to that of the base 6 and plate 12, with the outer part thereof similarly only being replaced for the moulding operation. The inserts may be preformed and fired rods of porous ceramic, or unfired rods of ceramic and organic material providing a desired porosity upon subsequent firing. The ceramic inserts may also comprise a conductive mixture of alumina and iron oxide moulded into non-conductive alumina.
