Abstract
1,199,810. Modified polyurathanes; coating compositions. REICHHOLD-ALBERT-CHEMIE A.G. 22 Aug., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967; 7 May, 1968], No. 40124/68. Heading C3R. [Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C7] Oil modified polyurethane resins are prepared by: (A) esterifying or transesterifying 35-75% by weight of a drying or semi-drying oil having an iodine number of 105-210 and/or of a fatty acid derived from such a drying or semi-drying oil with 0À1 to 25% by weight of one or more polyoxyalkylene compounds of general Formula (I) to such an extent that at least one part of the product is soluble in five parts of methanol (by weight): wherein: (wherein n and m are integers from 2 to 200 and R 5 is H or -CH 3 ), (B) reacting the resultant OH-containing product with 0À05-45% by weight of one or more polyisocyanates or a mixture of polyisocyanates and monoisocyanates; the amount used is < the stoichiometric quantity so that the product contains 0À01 to 0À12 OH group equivalents per 100 grammes of reaction product; and (C) heating the product of step (B) with 0À5 to 20% by weight of one or more polycarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides to obtain a product with an acid number of between 5 and 110. Up to 25% by weight of the oil or acid of another aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic acid may be present in step (A). Up to 6% by weight of maleic acid may be present in step (A) in the form of an adduct with the oil or acid. The oil used may be a condensate of wood oil and an (etherified) phenol-resol. A preferred polyoxyalkylene glycol has the formula where R is H or CH 3 and n is 2 to 200. The polycarboxylic acid anhydride used in step (C) may be maleic, citraconic, itaconic, aconitic, phthalic, tetrahydrophthalic or trimellitic anhydride or an anhydride of a dimeric or trimeric fatty acid having M.W. 98-1000. The preferred drying oils or semi-drying oils (or acids therefrom) are linseed oil, safflower oil, wood oil or oiticia oil. The polyisocyanate may be tolylene diisocyanate, diphenylmethane-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanate or mixtures thereof. Stage (a) may be carried out at 180-290‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst and stage (b) at 40-160‹ C. The product of stage (c) may be neutralized with ammonia or a strong nitrogen base to yield a water miscible product useful as a coating composition binder either for a conventional air drying paint or for use in electrophoretic deposition.
