Abstract

1,199,750. Controlled cooling of hot rolled wire rod. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Oct.25, 1967 [Nov. 5, 1966], No.48447/67. Heading C7N. Hot rolled steel wire rod from mill 1 is subjected to controlled cooling, e.g. to transform the texture of the steel from austenite to ferrite and pearlite or sorbite, by feeding it, preferably through water-cooled feeding device 2, on to rotating tube reel 3 which deposits the rod as coils alternatively on to one of two coil-collecting appliances e.g. baskets 15, one being equipped for bath patenting e.g. in salt bath container 10 (as shown) the other (7, Fig. 2) for air patenting. Tube reel 3 may rotate about a horizontal (as shown) or vertical axis, depositing non-concentric overlapping turns by means of tripping edge 5 upon a conveyer device e.g. belt 8 or roller bed arranged to slew horizontally about a swivel pivot 9, the end of the conveyer device being connected to the coil-collecting appliance. The appliance equipped for air patenting may be arranged immediately beneath or behind the rotating tube reel. The conveyer device may be connected with an air blast or suction appliance for cooling quickly to 600-700‹ C. to produce air patented steel wire rod having a lamellar pearlite texture. Alternatively the device e.g. belt 8 may be covered with an insulating casing 8a filled with neutral gas. For bath patenting, salt bath container 10 may be provided with heating and cooling means (not shown), and contain rods 11 supported upon driven eccentric shafts 12, 13 outside for reciprocating the coils forming upon collecting baskets 15. A lead or fluidized bed may be used instead of a salt bath.
