Abstract

1,199,447. Splicing plastic pipes. CENTRAL NATIONAL BANK OF CLEVELAND, and J. D. DRINKO. 28 July, 1967, No. 34712/67. Headings F2G and F2P. A splice member for joining elongated articles, particularly plastic pipes, is made by arranging a plurality of helical reinforcing elements, which have a pitch of the order of more than twice the diameter of the helix, on a mandrel or in a mould, embedding them in plastic material, helically slitting pipe lengths to form a plurality, e.g. a pair, of strips of arcuate section, and cutting the resulting pipe, which has an inner diameter about equal to the outer diameter of the articles to be joined, into convenient splicing lengths which can afterwards be wrapped around the abutting ends of the articles and secured, e.g. by adhesive. In the embodiment shown, the helical reinforcing elements 21, which are rods of either metal, e.g. aluminium, or a "rigid" polyvinyl chloride, are wrapped continuously around a helically wrapped strip forming a core 13, the assembly being then coated, e.g. by a spray nozzle 41, with more flexible plastic material 42. After setting of the plastic, the pipe thus formed is diametrically slit helically along a line parallel to and lying between two adjacent elements 21, before being finally cut into convenient lengths for splicing. Each pair of splice members thus formed is used to form a splice by wrapping the splice members around the abutting ends of, e.g., a pair of pipes 71, 72, and uniting them to each other along the lines G, H and to the tubes at F, I by cementing, bonding or flame welding. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown) the helical rod elements (21) are held by clamps (91) in position around individual cores (92) of splice length within individual moulds (93) which are filled with plastic material, the resulting tubular splice members being afterwards split helically to form pairs of splice members as in Fig. 7. Fig. 10 (not shown) discloses a pair of splice members each made as a strip of plastic material (111) reinforced and formed into a helix by helical rod elements (21) embedded in it.
