Abstract
1,199,354. Automatic train control; electrically continuous track. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 7 Oct., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 47393/68. Heading B7H. In an automatic train control arrangement in which continuous track 10 is divided into a series of track circuits by shorting bars 16 and in which speed information is transmitted to a train by a binary coded signal modulated on the track circuit signal, the number of different track circuit signal frequencies required to operate the arrangement safely is reduced by making the track circuit receivers also selective to the phase of the binary coded modulating signal. As shown in Fig. 2, track circuit signals of three frequencies f 1 , f 2 , and f 3 are used and applied in repeated sequence to succeeding track circuits, in addition each track circuit signal is modulated by a binary speed signal, e.g. 101011 representing a required speed of 50 m.p.h., the phase of which is varied to provide the six-phase different modulating signals shown. The signal applied to modulate a track circuit signal is also applied to the associated track circuit receiver for comparison purposes. The train carried receiver 28 is responsive to any of the frequencies f 1 -f 3 and provides a control signal indicative of required speed.
