Abstract

1,198,671. Gas manufacture. H. F. A. TOPSOE. 12 Sept., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 41534/67. Heading C5E. A gas, exchangeable with natural gas, is made by reacting a hydrocarbon feed in the gas phase with steam at 200-500‹ C. and a pressure of 1-200 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> gauge in the presence of a catalyst comprising Group VIII metals or copper and of an activator. Suitable activators are ammonia, hydrazine, hydrazines substituted by alkyl groups having 1-10 carbon atoms, and aliphatic amines having 1-10 carbon atoms and are used in amounts of 0À01 to 3% by weight, calculated as ammonia, of the hydrocarbon feedstock. The activator can be added continuously or intermittently into the reaction mixture either immediately before the latter is introduced into the reforming reactor or prior to a hydrodesulphurization of the feed. Ammonia can be added to the feed-water for steam reforming and the ammonia-containing water separated from the product gas can be recycled to the feed-water. Suitable feedstocks are propane, butane and light distillates boiling from 40-250‹ C. Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and lower alkanols can be included in the feed. The O: C ratio in the feed is between 0À3 and 30 and between 0À8 and 1À8 if the reaction is to be autothermic. The product gas, after removal of carbon oxides and excess steam, consists almost entirely of methane and hydrogen. Suitable catalysts are made by impregnating a porous carrier, e.g. magnesium aluminium spinel with Ni, Co, Fe or Cu or by incorporating the catalytic metal during formation of the spinel by coprecipitation; oxides of potassium and calcium can be included in the catalysts as promoters.
