Abstract

1,198,563. Non-linear resistors. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 26 April, 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 20072/68. Heading H1K. A non-linear resistor comprises a sintered body 1, consisting essentially of zinc oxide, having two main faces, one of which has an electrical resistivity higher than that of the other and two electrodes 2, 3 applied to these faces of the body, one making a non-ohmic contact with the face having a higher electrical resistivity and the second making either an ohmic or non-ohmic connection to the other surface. The low resistivity face is obtained by removing over one main face the high resistivity surface layer of the body formed during sintering in an oxidizing atmosphere. The body contains 90 to 99.95 mol. per cent of zinc oxide and at least one oxide from the group consisting of iron oxide, aluminium oxide, bismuth oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, zirconium oxide, tungsten oxide, cadmium oxide and chromium oxide. The non-ohmic electrode is substantially silver with small amounts of lead oxide, silicon dioxide, boron oxide, bismuth oxide, calcium oxide and cupric oxide, and is painted on to the body. The ohmic electrode may be an evaporated film of aluminium, zinc, tin or indium, an electroless or electrolytic plated film of silver, copper, nickel, zinc or tin or a metallized film of copper, tin, zinc or aluminium.
