Abstract

1,198,487. Inverting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 31 July, 1967, No. 35133/67. Heading H2F. An inverter comprises a pair of current paths between, respective D.C. supply terminals 13a, 13b and a load terminal 14a, each path including a bi-directional switching device S1, S2, and an independent inductor 18, 19, the other load terminal 14b being connectible to the centre-tap of a D.C. supply, the resonant frequency of each inductor 18 (or 19) with the load capacitance 20 being 1-2 times the operating frequency of devices S1, S2. As shown in Fig. 3, each independent inductor 18, 19 is tuned by capacitor 20 to 4050 c/s. whilst the thyristors CR1, CR2 are alternately triggered at 3000 c/s. Each thyristor is bridged by an inverse diode D1, D2 so that each circuit path 16, 17 is conductive for a full cycle of the oscillatory current. Loads 39, 40, 43, 44 having a leading power factor of 0À707 may be switched into the output transformer 35, a capacitor 37 coupled via a 1: 10 transformer 38 preventing a rise in voltage with increasing load. The output voltage may be adjusted by varying the frequency of gate pulses. Further thyristors and diodes may be included in series or parallel with those shown. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the D.C. supply is derived from a bridge rectifier followed by an LC smoothing circuit having a centre-tapped output capacitive divider. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 994,178 and 999,544.
