Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A rigid polyurethane foam article with an integral non foamed skin is made by introducing a rigid polyurethane foam-forming composition into a mould at the same temperature as the composition; the mass of composition being at least twice the minimum needed to fill the mould when foamed. The foam may be formed in a one step process from a polyether-polyol containing at least three hydroxyl groups and having an hydroxyl index of from 300-600 and crude toluene diisocyanate, crude diphenylmethane diisocyanate or polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate, the NCO: OH ratio being equal to or greater than one. In an alternative embodiment, a "quasi prepolymer" may be prepared from the above polyether-polyol and four to six times the stoichiometric amount of an organic polyisocyanate and this quasi prepolymer and be mixed with more of the polyether-polyol in a second stage to give a NCO: OH ratio equal to or greater than one. The finished article has a smooth rigid surface, a substantally non-porous skin, a slightly porous highly dense zone and a highly porous low density foam interior.
