Abstract

1308637 Moulding foam resin compositions BAYER AG 29 June 1970 [23 July 1969] 31380/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Foams are prepared by foaming a reaction mixture comprising a compound which contains at least two hydrogen atoms that are reactive with isocyanate groups, a polyisocyanate, at least one compound which contains one or more olefinic double bonds and which may also contain hydrogen atoms which are reactive with isocyanate groups, a blowing agent,- activators for the NCO/active H reaction and for the addition polymerization reaction and optionally a foam stabilizer, the foaming occurring with simultaneous polymerization and polyaddition and the reaction being carried out in a closed mould, the capacity of which is from 1/10 to 9/10 of the volume which the foamed product would take up if expanded in an open mould, the temperature of the internal surface of the mould being at least 20‹ C. below the maximum temperature occurring within the reaction mass during the reaction. Suitably, the compounds containing reactive hydrogen atoms are polyethers or polyesters. Polyisocyanates used conventionally in the manufacture of polyurethane foams are suitable. Particularly suitable olefinic monomers are styrene and acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and derivatives thereof also being suitable. Activators for the NCO active H reaction are suitably tertiary amines or organotin compounds. The polymerization catalyst may be peroxidic compounds or nitrogen compounds such as azodiisobutyronitrile or esters of azodiisobutyric acid. The mould is preferably made of metal and the temperature of its surface may be kept constant using air, water or an oil. The temperature of the mould may be kept at room temperature or the mould may be preheated.
