Abstract

1,197,870. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 23 April, 1969 [15 May, 1968], No. 20761/69. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G2] A drum rotating about its longitudinal axis is also moved so that this axis describes a closed path. A given portion of the drum locates positions about this path at which an image is applied to and removed from the portion; the speed of the portion falling at these positions and rising between them. As shown in Fig. 1, a photoconductive drum 10 is carried by an arm 16 about an axis 18 and is rotated by frictional contact with constraining means 20. A particular point on the drum's surface follows a path 40 to locate the usual electrophotographic working stations at 42, 44, 46, 48, 50. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the drum traverses an elliptical path. A printing device, Fig. 6 (and Fig. 7, not shown), comprises a number of such drums 110 spaced by gears 130 and located in a constraining means 132 with stations for charging 134, developing 136 and cleaning 138. Three such assemblies are mounted on a head 108. Images are reflected via a mirror 126 on to the drums. Each time a drum prints a character on a web 133 the head 108 rotates by one character space. As one assembly finishes a line, the next assembly on the head 108 is ready to start the next one. This may be done by continuously moving the web 133 to obtain slanted lines.
