Abstract

1,197,842. Polyamide emulsions. W. R. GRACE & CO. 10 Jan., 1969 [12 Jan., 1968], No. 1995/68. Heading C3R. The invention comprises aqueous emulsions and solid suspensions of complexes of polyamides and alkalis, the polyamides being of high molecular weights corresponding to amine values below 10. They are obtained by adding water to a solution of the polyamide in an organic solvent, e.g. iso propanol or n - propanol, removing at least a part of the solvent, e.g. by distillation, and emulsifying the mixture in the presence of the alkali or adding alkali after the formation of the emulsion. The alkali may be an alkali metal hydroxide, ammonia or an amine. In examples a polyamide obtained from polymeric fatty acids is emulsified using n-propanol as the solvent and ammonia, potassium hydroxide and di-isopropylamine as alkalis; the emulsions also contain a polyoxymethylene and a sodium polyacrylate.
