Abstract
1,197,743. Methyl ethyl ketone. FISONS INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS Ltd. 25 March, 1968 [8 April, 1967], No. 16200/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] In the preparation of hydrazine and methyl ethyl ketone a two-phase mixture of 1À5-2À5 parts by weight of water and 1 part by weight of methyl ethyl ketone azine is fed to an inlet point of a fractionating column (operated at 3-15 atmos. above atmospheric pressure and at 150-200‹ C.) to form a mixture of methyl ethyl ketazine, methyl ethyl ketone, hydrazine and methyl ethyl ketone hydrazone, the methyl ethyl ketone being recovered from above the feed point and the remaining azine and hydrazone being stripped from the column by steam, at 6-8 theoretical plates below the feed point, to leave an aqueous solution of N 2 H 4 in the sump, the residence time in the sump (preferably 1-2 hours) being sufficient to allow conversion of residual ketazine and hydrazone to hydrazine. Preferably the 2-phase mixture is heated to 150-200‹ C. before feeding to the column, and the aqueous solution is withdrawn from the sump and distilled to recover the hydrazine.
