Abstract

1,197,471. Uses of luminescence. SAUNDERS ROE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 27 Feb., 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 12501/67. Heading C4S. A method of producing a self-luminous material wherein the ion implantation process (as described in Science Journal, February, 1967) is used to deposit ions of a radioactive isotope (e.g. H 3 , Kr 85 , Pr 147 ) within the lattice structure of single phosphor crystals (e.g. ZnS or Eu or Gd phosphors), the process consisting in the extraction of radioactive ions from a plasma (e.g. by an electrostatic field), collimating the ions into a narrow beam and accelerating same to impinge on the target. The target may be a pure metal or an alloy. The radioactive source may be in the solid state, the atoms being extracted by sputtering to enter the plasma, separation being achieved by an e.m. analyser prior to acceleration on to the target. Ions channelling between rows and planes of the crystal without major collisions, are implanted beyond the statistical range. Instanced are applications to EXIT signs, direction indicators and markers, watch, clock and radio dials. The material may be used as luminescent paint or contained within or used to coat the internal surface of a translucent capsule or bulb
