Abstract

1,197,442. Electric motors; control of stepping motors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 6 Sept., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966], No. 40410/66. Headings H2A and H2J. [Also in Division F4] A low speed D.C. stepping motor which drives the rotating reflector 3 of a flashing beacon lamp comprises a hollow cylindrical rotor 4 with portions cut away to define a number of equiangularly spaced rotor poles, a stator assembly 6 consisting of a pair of windings, and an annular permanent magnet assembly 7 having alternate north and south poles spaced around its periphery, the number of poles in the rotor and magnet assembly being the same. The motor is controlled by an astable transistor circuit or free-running oscillator, Fig. 3, which delivers alternate pulses to the windings, the circuit comprising cross-coupled pairs of transistors T1-T4 and output transistors T5, T6 the collector circuits of which include the stator windings 18, 19. If an A.C. supply is available the motor may be equipped with a single winding and the oscillator circuit can be modified to change the supply frequency to the required stepping frequency.
