Desalination of sea and brackish waters, separation of electrolytes from industrial wastes and deionisation of sugar juices such as molasses, whey, glycerol and film emulsions is carried out using heterogeneous cation or anion exchange membranes or bipolar ion exchange membranes prepared by intimately mixing pulverulent cation and/or anion exchange active material with an epoxy resin precondensate or epoxy resin precondensate-polyvinyl chloride mixture as binder in a weight ratio of from 1:1 to 4:1, a hardener and a solvent or solvent mixture, applying the mixture to a supporting fabric and curing thereon.
