Abstract

1,197,271. Purification of oxides. DEUTSCHE GOLD - UND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT. 18 Jan., 1968 [21 Jan., 1967], No. 2766/68. Headings C1A and C1N. Finely divided oxides or mixtures of oxides produced by vapour phase oxidation or hydrolysis of chlorides, are purified by introducing the oxide into a treatment zone heated to 400-600‹ C. in which it descends under gravity in countercurrent to an ascending stream of a mixture of steam and an inert gas, the flow of gas being insufficient to fluidize the oxide. The gas mixture is preferably of steam and compressed air preheated to 120‹ C. The oxide may be SiO 2 of s.a. 200 m<SP>2</SP>/gm., TiO 2 , or Al 2 O 3 of s.a. 80 m<SP>2</SP>/gm. The treatment zone may be a vertical tube widened at its upper and lower ends. It may be heated externally by electric heating coils or internally by H 2 burners, the flames being screened from the solid (in this case, steam for the treatment is produced by the burners). The pH of a 4% aqueous dispersion of the oxide is increased from 1À9 to 4 or 4À2 (for SiO 2 ) or from 1À5 to 8À2 (for Al 2 O 3 ).
