Abstract

1,196,670. Poly-(alkylene terephthalates). BEMBERG S.p.A. 19 Dec., 1967 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 58173/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division B1] A poly-(alkylene terephthalate) is made by feeding a bis-(hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate to a heated vessel 3 maintained under vacuum and where it flows down a spiral channel 2, open at the top, into a collecting chamber 4. Molten prepolymer from the chamber 4 is fed to a column 15, also maintained under vacuum, in which it is split into three branches each feeding two spinnerets 17. Rectangular films of prepolymer are extruded from the spinnerets and fall freely through spaces 18 defined by vertical walls 19 which are heated by vapours circulating in the space 20 and polycondensation of the films take place. Molten polymer is collected in a heated funnel-shaped chamber 21. The polymethylene glycol distilled off during the polycondensation is removed from vessel 2 and column 15.
