[Also in Division B8] Tapes to be printed on are fed intermittently between downward-facing stationary flat platen 40 and oscillating forme bed 41, which bears a plate inked by travelling rollers. From a reel 2 in tape magazine 1 each tape passes through the nip of a pair of driving rollers, one of which is rotated intermittently and advances the tape in incremental steps, is printed on and is reeled on a former 9 rotated by belt or chain 10 in synchronism with the movement of the driving rollers. After printing, the tapes move over guides 21, 22 with their printed sides outwards, so avoiding smudging. The length of tape advances and printed on during each episode of feeding may be adjusted both by a coarse means involving alternate placement of a pin in holes in a crank arm and by fine adjustment of the stroke length of a driving rack in a train driven by the crank, using a screw jack. When a reel of tape is complete on a former 9, the tape may be cut by knife 8, a new former swung into position and sufficient extra length of tape to allow it to be attached to the former obtained by pivoting bracket 7. When printing recommences bracket 7 is returned to its original position by a drive from forme bed 41. Trade circulars, tickets and other sheet products may be printed instead of tapes, and reeling of the printed product be replaced by severing of a web into sheets by a guillotine. Two or more colours may be printed, each with its own inking apparatus. Changeover from single colour working to multi-colour printing may be accomplished by changing the number of sets of inking apparatus and proportionately changing the length of advance of the web at each step. Safety guards G1, G2 are arranged to prevent operation of the machine until they are in positions preventing access to the driving rollers.
