Abstract

1,196,462. Cooling towers. GKN BIRWELKO Ltd. 31 Jan., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 6007/67. Heading F4S. The heat exchange elements of a dry-cooling tower 10 are arranged at the lower end of the tower shell within the area bounded by shell support means 14. The elements consist of horizontal tubes extending between headers and are arranged in relatively inclined banks disposed to form so-called A frames, the assembly covering a major portion of the area within the support means 14. Sealing plates 54...60 between the element groups and between the outermost group and the tower wall prevent by-passing of the tubes by the cooling air which enters the tower between the struts of the support means 14. The arrangement is said to provide a more uniform static pressure at the underside of the element assembly, resulting in a generally uniform air flow through the tower. In the arrangement shown, the heat exchange elements are grouped at at least two different levels, the element groups E and F in the central region being at a relatively low level and being surrounded by at least one ring of elements, comprising, e.g. groups A, B, C and D, at a relatively higher level. The assembly of heat exchange elements is supported within the tower structure on a reinforced concrete framework which carries a pair of rails 28 on which is mounted a beam crane utilized when inserting the tubes into their respective headers, e.g. 50A, these having been previously mounted on the cross-beams (e.g. 32, 35) of the concrete framework and interconnected by transverse and support members (e.g. 51A, 52A) so as to form for each element a triangular framework to receive the tubes. Access to the tubes for maintenance, is through an opening normally closed by a removable floor 61. A liquid to be cooled is circulated through the elements and provision is made for draining individual elements under adverse ambient air conditions, or for draining the whole system, all as described in Specification 1,196,461.
