Apparatus for finishing the edge of an elongated doctor blade comprises (i) a support for the blade; (ii) a guide parallel to the support; (iii) a head carried on the guide and movable longitudinally thereon by a traversing mechanism ; (iv) a honing stone support on the head capable of movement in a transverse direction across the width of the edge of the blade; (v) an elongated cam member extending lengthwise of the guide; and (vi) a cam follower engaging the cam and connected to the honing stone support to cause transverse movements of the tone support as it is traversed along the blade. A machine, for first grinding the edge of a doctor blade and then honing the edge surfaces of the blade, comprises a heavy rigid base on which is mounted a horizontal support to hold a long flexible thin metal doctor blade 9; the support includes clamps to hold the blade in close contact with a brass support strip, or the complete blade carrier as used on a printing press may be positioned in the support; the support has adjustment means for positioning the blade vertically or at an inclination to the vertical. Parallel with the blade support, the base carries two parallel guide tubes on which a sliding head 10 can be traversed by mechanism including endless chains driven by an electric motor. The head 10 carries an electric motor 11, the spindle of which is connected at its lower end to a cup-shaped grinding wheel 12 for grinding the upper edges surface of the blade. The motor is vertically adjustable. A honing attachment 13 is also carried by the head 10, being removable therefrom by a quickrelease clamp device 14 released by rotating a nut 15; the honing attachment comprises a bracket 16 attached to the head by a stud 17 engaging the nut 15 and locating pins 18 extending through apertures in the bracket. The bracket is formed with a horizontal guide 19 extending perpendicular to the length of the blade; a slide 20 on the guide is urged rearwardly by a spring 21 and carries a cam follower including a roller 22. The slide has a vertical tube 24 in which is slidably and rotatably mounted a rod 25 to which is attached a honing stone support 26 downwardly urged by a spring 27. A clamp 28 is provided for adjusting the vertical position of the stone support when required; a clamp 29 is provided to lock the slide on the guide to render the cam follower ineffective. A cam plate 8 is mounted on the machine base extending horizontally generally parallel to the blade support and to the guides for the head, the front surface of the cam plate being inclined at a shallow angle forwardly as it extends between the two opposite ends of the guides; the forward displacement of the cam plate is approximately equal to the corresponding dimension of the honing stone support 26. When the edge surface of the blade has been honed, the blade support is unclamped and moved forwardly to bring the flank surface of the blade against a vertical surface of the stone; the slide 20 is clamped on the guide 19 and the traversing mechanism operated, thus removing burrs.
