Abstract

1,195,487. Measuring tilt electrically. SINGER-GENERAL PRECISION Inc. June 11, 1968, No. 27775/68. Heading GIN. The angle of tilt of the rotor 14 Fig. 1 of a gyroscope about each of two axes 20, 22 mutually perpendicular to the spin axis 16 is measured by inductive sensors 24, 26 and 28, 30 on each of the two axes, co-operating with a magnetizable ring 18 on the rotor. Each sensor comprises a coil 40, 42 Fig. 3 on one leg 36, 38 of a U-shaped core 32 attached to the housing 12. The two coils 40, 42 joined in series form one arm of a bridge circuit, the adjacent arm being formed by the coils of the diametrically opposite sensor, e. g. sensors 24, 26, and the bridge is completed by fixed equal resistors. The bridge is normally balanced but when the rotor axis 16 tilts about e.g. axis 20 the gaps between the sensors 24, 26 and ring 18 vary differentially, and the bridge unbalance indicates the magnitude and direction of tilt. The other pair of sensors 28, 30 may form an additional branch of the same bridge, to determine tilt about the other axis 22.
