Abstract

1,195,471. Transistor amplifying circuits; pulse modulation circuits. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Jan., 1969 [l5 Jan., 1968; 17 May, 1968], No. 2234/68. Headings H3T and H4L. [Also in Divisions G1 and G4] A current-to-frequency converter (Fig. 4) comprises a capacitor 43 connected across an amplifier 42 which together integrate the input current. The output is fed to a control circuit 45 which emits a pulse at a predetermined level to cause transistor 44 to conduct and discharge capacitor 43. The output is a sawtooth voltage whose frequency is determined by the input level. Amplifier (Fig. 6).-The signal from a bridge 90, indicating the deviation from a predetermined value of the temperature measured by a thermocouple 51, is fed to a chopper amplifier 93 comprising a double emitter transistor 95 fed with A.C. at terminals 97. The resulting square wave output is amplified at 98 and supplied in parallel to two transistors 100, 101 fed with the same A.C. in opposite phase on their second emitters. The resulting alternate pulses of D.C. are fed to amplifier 104, with smoothing provided by capacitors 107, 108, the output at 52 being proportional to the input signal. Negative feedback via integrating network 109 provides a phase-advance component to compensate for time lag in the operation of the thermocouple 51.
